"Vietnam Takes a Stand: The Barbie Movie Ban and the Nine-Dash Line Controversy"

Get Ready for a Sensational Showdown as Vietnam Bans Barbie Movie!

In a shocking move that has sent shockwaves across the entertainment world, Vietnam has decided to ban the highly anticipated Barbie film, otherwise set to hit theaters on July 21 sparking a social media frenzy. What’s the reasoning behind this daring decision? A scenario depicting a map of the disputed Chinese claims in the South China Sea.
Vietnam is one of the countries that passionately opposes China’s brazen claim to own practically the whole South China Sea. However, it is unclear which picture features the “offensive image” of China’s infamous nine-dash line, a symbol used by China to signify its territorial ambitions in the region.
The eminent head of Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s movie division, Vi Kien Thanh, described the map representation of China’s disputable nine-dash line as an “illegal image.” This latest prohibition comes after Vietnam decided to forbid the movie Uncharted for comparable reasons in 2022.
Long a source of contention, China’s claim to more than 80% of the South China Sea is made more so by its reliance on a 1947 map marked by ambiguous dashes known as the “nine-dash line.” This boundary encircles Hainan Island in the far south in a loop that is about 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) long. Vietnam vigorously refutes these accusations, along with the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan, and engages in contentious discussions with China to determine the veracity of each country’s claims.
The bold Nine-Dash Line on Chinese maps, which has long been a staple of Communist Party maps, questions the UNCLOS’s (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) recognized maritime limits. This convention has been accepted by a vast majority of countries, including China itself. It is a tribute to the collected wisdom of states over millennia.
The fact that the United States, although not a signatory, acknowledges UNCLOS as established international law highlights the illegality of China’s claims within the Nine-Dash Line.
The UNCLOS claims made by Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei are squarely at odds with the Nine-Dash Line. The Nine-Dash Line continues to be a simmering flashpoint between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors given the continued reliance on it by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia in their UN procedures and diplomatic engagements.
Vietnam speaks out the message loud and clear that countries will not back down.
