The Rick and Morty Season 7 Trailer Unveils Justin Roiland's Replacement Voice Actors
Until the US premiere of the upcoming season, the new voice actors remained a secret.
With the US premiere of Rick and Morty season 7, the voice actors who will be taking Justin Roiland’s place as co-creator were unveiled. Grandpa Rick Sanchez, an alcoholic scientist, is narrated by Ian Cardoni, while Morty Smith, his foolish grandson, is voiced by Harry Belden. The new voices—or, as Adult Swim calls it, “soundalikes”—were initially heard in the teaser, but the studio chose not to reveal who they were. For those who don’t know, early this year, charges of misbehaviour led to the firing of the show’s co-creator, Roiland, from the firm. The accusations were eventually dropped, but he was allegedly “using his fame to pursue young fans,” according to a September NBC investigation.”We want the programme to be the voice of itself. In a story from last month, an Adult Swim source stated, “We want to preserve the viewing experience for fans and we believe in the strength of the season and our new voices.” I can see this leading to problems, such as some ardent fans going out of their way to research the voice actors’ previous roles and disparage or avoid them because of it; however, the Rick and Morty season 7 teaser gave fans ample warning that the actors would not deviate too much from Roiland’s interpretation of those characters. Variety claims that the customary “Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon” credit above the logo was absent from the opening credits for the newest season.
The seventh episode of Rick and Morty exudes a sense of retribution, as the main scientist dedicates the whole chapter to tracking down Rick Prime—his other persona that murdered the former’s family. Together with Morty, a group of rescuers including Birdperson, Gearhead, President Curtis, and Mr. Poopybutthole will go through multiversal tears while facing Robot Ghosts, bloody spaghetti, and other misadventures. John Allen has been cast as the new voice of Mr. Poopybutthole, a recurrent character who was formerly portrayed by Roiland as well. This relieves Cardoni and Belden of some of the burden they were already carrying.Showrunner Scott Marder stated in an interview that “it was a lot to ask either of them to fully take on Poopy, in the time crunch we were in, as well as because it’s the most expanded role Poopy has had.” In the end, we located John Allen, a player who entered the game late.He relieved Ian and Harry of some of their workload, but it seemed excessive for them to be performing Poopy in a show episode that they had to redo from scratch. They said that hundreds of people applied during the six-month hunt for new voice performers, the majority of whom sounded more like WWE superstar Macho Man Randy Savage than Rick. It turns out that while some of the tryouts were excellent “in splashes,” they struggled to deliver the voices in a conversational manner.
