While on the island of La Tolqa, James Foster and his wife Em met Gabi, an admirer of his novel. As they explore the island, they see James murder a local. They chose to strike and run out of fear of corruption. The island does, however, have a special justice system where James may duplicate himself and let the party who was wronged stab the duplicate. James joins a gang of affluent vacationers who commit crimes and transfer retribution to their clones, and Em finds this exciting.
